HOW DOES IT WORK?

When a tattoo is made, dye is injected into the skin-being absorbed by certain skin cells. The dye remains in those cells for life and is not absorbed by the body, thus giving the appearance of color under the skin. Laser light is specifically absorbed by cells which have injected tattoo dye, causing them to heat up and die. These cells are later broken down and cleared by the body, leading to disappearance of the tattoo. Surrounding skin tissue is virtually unaffected by the laser energy.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?

During treatments you may feel a pinch similar to a snapping rubber band on your skin. Topical anesthetics may be used, but are seldom needed. The entire procedure is very brief and noninvasive, lasting 10-20 minutes depending on the size of the tattoo. Multiple treatments are needed over a few months before the effect is complete. Mild irritation of the surrounding skin may be evident although these resolve completely. Avoidance of sun exposure is extremely important as with any laser treatment.
